Bernie Sanders booed as Democratic hopefuls try to woo women of color

Today 07:00 GMT

White House candidate Bernie Sanders got a rocky reception when he gave a halting performance at an event this week focusing on female voters of color, while Kamala Harris was given a standing ovation – but was vigorously challenged in the popularity stakes by rivals Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke.

Women of color are such a powerful voting bloc in America that they are predicted to be highly influential – if not decisive – in choosing the Democratic nominee for the 2020 election.

Thursday 21:51 GMT

KAMALA HARRIS AND CORY BOOKER MISSED MOST VOTES OF ALL DEM SENATORS RUNNING IN 2020. “I am very confident that this election, we will make history, because no matter what, I'm looking you in the eye and saying this, there will be a woman on the ticket. I don't know if it's in the vice president's position or the president's position,” Booker said last month at a campaign event in New Hampshire.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., announced Wednesday that voters can expect to see a female on the ticket if he wins his party’s nomination.

Thursday 16:21 GMT

“Because as a woman, you have to bring extra homework – Elizabeth Warren calculated two cents on every dollar over $50m; Kamala is breaking down the statistics on maternal mortality as it relates to race and class; but a dude can just come in and be like, yeah, I’m just gonna wing it.”

After days of Mueller report coverage, Trevor Noah shifted focus to the 2020 presidential race, fully under way even 18 months out from election day.

Britt McHenry: Elizabeth Warren took a stab at fixing a looming crisis, but she hit far from the mark

Tuesday 12:40 GMT

ELIZABETH WARREN DOUBLES DOWN ON TRUMP IMPEACHMENT PUSH, SAYS IT'S ‘BIGGER THAN POLITICS’. But if you make more than $250,000 annually, well, you’re out of luck in this Oprah-like freebie contest.

Warren deserves credit for emerging as the only 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to substantively acknowledge the estimated $1.5 trillion in debt. The United States has a massive student loan debt problem that has crippled the finances of Millennials and will continue to do so, if not properly addressed.

Elizabeth Warren's plan to end student debt is glorious. We can make it a reality

Thursday 09:54 GMT

This week, Elizabeth Warren, who is running for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, announced a proposal to cancel student debt for millions of people and make public college free.

If we want a real student debt jubilee to actually happen – to go from policy paper to reality – the grassroots will need to continue to push for it. But like every other progressive proposal now being touted by presidential hopefuls, from Medicare for All to the Green New Deal, the call for debt relief and free education first came from the grassroots.

Warren, Amazon spar in Twitter war, as 2020 Dem accuses tech giant of 'deliberately misconstruing' facts

Thursday 00:34 GMT

Warren kicked off the spat on Monday by reiterating her argument that Amazon abuses its control over the Amazon Marketplace, which hosts third-party sellers, to improve its own retail operations and unfairly disadvantage the third-party sellers.

Warren asserted that similar antitrust principles were "applied to railroad companies more than a hundred years ago," and that "we need to now look at those tech platforms the same way."

Elizabeth Warren's polarizing plan to make college free

Wednesday 19:04 GMT

The evidence certainly suggests that the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" argument against Warren's proposal is tone-deaf at best and historically ignorant at worst — and that, at the very least, it is worth renewing the commitment by state governments to subsidize their local colleges and universities.

Her latest offering is a detailed proposal to make two- and four-year public colleges free for students, accompanied by plans to forgive the student loans of up to 42 million Americans, plus a pledge of at least $50 billion in new funding to support historically black colleges and universities.

Thursday 08:03 GMT

Democrat Elizabeth Warren’s $1.25 trillion plan to cancel existing student loan debt and make college free has been slammed as a “sweeping bailout for the middle class” and a regressive giveaway to the wealthy at the expense of the poor. “Her latest big idea — to eliminate vast quantities of student debt and make public universities tuition-free — is not a sound idea,” wrote the Washington Post’ editorial board on Tuesday.

Wednesday 12:40 GMT

Bernie Sanders maintains ‘pro-Israel’ stance, decries Netanyahu’s government as ‘racist’

Wednesday 02:24 GMT

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is standing by his criticism of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the U.S. goal in the Middle East must be to try to bring people together and “not just support one country, which is now run by a right-wing, dare I say, racist government.” Sanders said Monday at a CNN town hall in New Hampshire that he believes the United States should “deal with the Middle East on a level-playing-field basis.”

Elizabeth Warren wants to 'cancel' student debt for millions

Tuesday 13:35 GMT

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced a proposal on Monday aimed at alleviating the student loan debt crisis by largely eliminating the obligations altogether.

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate wrote in a blog post on Medium that she would like to cancel $50,000 in student debt for individuals with household incomes below $100,000 – or about 42 million people. American households with higher incomes, up to $250,000, would also see some of their debt written off as well.
