‘A Parkland every five days’: project tells stories of the children lost to gun violence

The everyday killings of young Americans add up to “a Parkland every five days,” according to a new project from The Trace, a nonprofit that covers gun violence, in collaboration with McClatchy newspapers and the Miami Herald.

The project relied on gun death data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks shootings and gun deaths in real time using media reports. Journalists on the project also requested reports from hundreds of police agencies to verify the details of the incidents.

Hard border in Ireland would trigger return to violence, says report

There will be a return to violence in Northern Ireland if there is any infrastructure installed on the border, an in-depth report on youth and peace in the region has concluded.

“The challenge for us all is to make sure the peace process is not jeopardised by a return to a hard border due to Brexit or a premature border poll,” said Daly.. “The peace won by previous generations must not be jeopardised by the current generations and that peace must be passed on intact for generations to come.”

'A free pass for mobs to kill': India urged to stem cow vigilante violence

Hindu cow vigilante groups in India are escaping punishment for lynchings because of police inertia and complicity by local officials, leaving the family of those affected without justice, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch.

“Calls for cow protection may have started out as a way to attract Hindu votes, but it has transformed into a free pass for mobs to violently attack and kill minority group members,” said Meenakshi Ganguly, south Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

Albanian opposition holds anti-government rally

At an opposition rally on Saturday, protestors threw tones at the prime minister's office and the government headquarters and tried to break in.

Thousands of opposition supporters flooded the Albania capital Tirana on Thursday calling on the government to step down, claiming it is corrupt and has ties to organized crime. The EU warned against a repeat of weekend violence and called the resignations damaging to democracy.
