Archbishop’s defiance threatens Putin’s vision of Russian greatness

Sunday 23:40 GMT

Politicians in Kiev say the Moscow patriarchate is a vehicle for advancing Russia’s influence, normalising its 2014 annexation of Crimea and justifying Putin’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Bartholomew’s act of defiance is a serious blow for Putin, who has used the Moscow branch’s dominance – it oversees about half of the 300 million-strong Orthodox communion – to bolster his regime’s claim to be the heir to the tsarist imperium.

The move means priests from the two churches cannot serve together while worshippers of one cannot take communion in the other.

Opinion: Orthodox Church rift is a defeat for Vladimir Putin

Tuesday 23:41 GMT

The imminent emergence of an independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine deals a blow to Vladimir Putin's attempts to keep the country in Moscow's orbit and bruises the Russian Orthodox Church, writes Konstantin Eggert.

While the exact date of granting autocephaly, or independence, to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church remains to be determined, the decision by the ecumenical patriarchate in Istanbul (since the days of the Byzantine Empire traditionally called the Constantinople patriarchate) to proceed with it led to a complete breakdown in relations with the Russian Orthodox Church.

Crimea college shooting rampage shocks Russia

Friday 20:02 GMT

Several observers in Russia have described the attack in Crimea as "Russia's Columbine", drawing parallels to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in the US, which killed 13.

Twenty people were killed and more than 50 wounded in the suicide shooting rampage, which also included at least one homemade bomb. Since yesterday evening, locals have been bringing flowers, candles and toys to the scene.
