Screams and gunshots: Snapchat and smartphones have changed what the public sees and hears during school shootings

Scenes from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were viewed by millions of people almost live on Wednesday, with gunshots and screams recorded for everyone on the internet to see and hear.

For a country in which school shootings have become a regular occurence, the social media videos provided an important vantage point that isn’t otherwise available, said Alfred Hermida, director of the graduate school of journalism at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

GPS, smartphones and speed keep road deaths at 10-year high

Deaths on the road reached 40,000 last year, down just 1% from 40,100 in 201, according to a report released Thursday by National Safety Council.

This relies on the driver to initiate and doesn’t deal with the multiple distractions or “must-have features” that already exist in most cars — including Apple CarPlay, which can show everything from messaging apps to audiobooks.
