Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Michelle Obama are connecting with millions of Americans – here’s the real reason why

Today 10:49 GMT

No matter what you may think personally about Ocasio-Cortez or Michelle Obama, the fact remains that there are tens of millions of Americans out there who are hurting and suffering in ways you may not imagine.

Conversely, it is precisely because of my childhood that I believe some of my conservative and Republican friends are making a critical mistake when assessing the popularity of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and former first lady Michelle Obama.

In praise of Mueller

Today 14:28 GMT

We don't know precisely what's in the report the special counsel delivered this week to the Department of Justice, but it seems possible it will contain neither the full-throated condemnation of President Trump that critics want — there are reports Mueller has recommended no further indictments — nor the clean-sweep exoneration that many MAGA-minded citizens have been demanding from the beginning.

Green New Deal sparks ongoing debate as Republicans label it economy killer

Today 14:28 GMT

Republicans have mocked the Green New Deal as a progressive pipedream that would drive the economy off a cliff and lead to a huge tax increase.

To Democratic supporters, the Green New Deal is a touchstone, a call to arms to combat climate change with the full measure of the nation’s resources and technological might. “A mission to save all of creation,” in the words of Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey, one the plan’s lead authors.

Emergency FOIA request filed seeking public release of Mueller report, related docs

Today 14:28 GMT

A nonprofit organization has filed the first known Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit seeking the immediate and total public disclosure of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's completed report, echoing bipartisan calls for transparency following his nearly two-year probe into whether the Trump campaign illegally colluded with Russia.

EPIC first filed a FOIA request seeking access to Mueller-related documents in November 2018 and requested expedited processing, citing the "overwhelming" public interest in the case. But the Justice Department, on behalf of Mueller's office, wrote back that EPIC could effectively take a hike because the DOJ could not “identify a particular urgency to inform the public about an actual or alleged federal government activity."

‘It doesn’t matter’: End of Mueller probe met with underwhelmed public reaction

Today 14:28 GMT

Mueller investigation report doesn’t recommend any further indictments, source says. Jason Cox, a 51-year-old farmer in Campbellsville, Kentucky, who voted for Trump in 2016 and plans to again next year, saw it the way Trump framed it — as a witch hunt.

How Robert Mueller managed to protect his Trump-Russia probe from leaks. “I don’t feel that where the country is right now that this is something we should even be discussing,” she said.

The Mueller report should be rejected and not believed – it's fatally flawed

Today 10:49 GMT

Whatever the report reveals, it is the product of a process and a special counsel team that were both fatally flawed from the beginning.

As a result, the Mueller report should be rejected out of hand by every American who cares at all about the concept of fundamental fairness that our founders intended to be a primary guiding principle for our government officials. No matter what’s in the report, Mueller has already ensured that a large portion of the public will never have confidence in it.

Republican Bill Weld on challenging Trump: ‘It’s going to be a lot of fun'

Today 06:03 GMT

Bill Weld ponders, in a New England patrician style that comes with having governed Massachusetts for six years, then says: “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun running against Trump. I don’t intend to stand on one leg looking uncomfortable – he’ll get as good as he gives.”

There’s only one way to begin an interview with the person poised to challenge Donald Trump for the presidential nomination of the Republican party in 2020, and that’s to ask him: are you a masochist?

'I'm not a fan': Trump's grudge against John McCain continues even in death

Today 03:18 GMT

Trump continues to identify McCain as a central antagonist of his presidency and the source of his greatest woes: blaming him for his role in presenting the FBI with an unverified intelligence report, the so-called “Steele dossier”, after the 2016 election.

Despite pleas from senior Republicans to stop, Trump has continued his verbal assault on McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and six-term senator who was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Jadon Sancho is the type of player England has and Germany wants

Saturday 22:44 GMT

A goal eluded Jadon Sancho on his first competitive start for England at Wembley on Friday night, but the Borussia Dortmund forward nevertheless showed why he is in such demand - at home and abroad.

While Löw now wants to build his latest, and probably last, Germany team around Leroy Sané, his English counterpart Gareth Southgate has Raheem Sterling and Sancho, who lined-up either side of Harry Kane against the Czech Republic on Friday night.

Saturday 21:48 GMT

Raheem Sterling scored his first England hat-trick as their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign started in hugely impressive fashion as they outclassed the Czech Republic at Wembley.

Sterling, in tandem with Kane and Sancho, terrorised the Czech Republic defence, stealing in for a poacher's first goal before a driving run into the area brought England a penalty. He showed great awareness to score his second on the turn before getting a deserved slice of good fortune with a deflection for his hat-trick.

UK retail sales up but food spending falls

Friday 15:25 GMT

Unusually warm weather in February contributed to the rise in retail sales, said the ONS, boosting spending at garden centres and on sporting equipment.

The ONS's head of retail sales, Rhian Murphy, said strong increases in fuel sales and online shopping had also driven the continued "bounce back". She added: "Food growth slowed, however, due to a significant fall for supermarkets, specialist food and alcohol stores in February after the sales and promotions seen in January came to an end."

Saturday 18:08 GMT

She said that the individual was "a person who is not a part of the Charlottesville school system and community" and added that he made the "hateful threat... under the guise of being a Charlottesville high school student."
