Carol Channing, iconic Broadway star, dies at age 97

Carol Channing, the lanky, ebullient musical comedy star who delighted American audiences over almost 5,000 performances as the scheming Dolly Levi in “Hello, Dolly” on Broadway and beyond, has died.

Oscar-nominated set decorator, former actor Garrett Lewis dies of natural causes at 77. Channing was not the immediate choice to play Dolly, a matchmaker who receives her toughest challenge yet when a rich grump seeks a suitable wife.

Hello Dolly's Carol Channing dies aged 97

Three-time Tony award winning actress Bernadette Peters, who portrayed Channing's famous role of Dolly Gallagher Levi in the US tour of the musical last year, said that the stage veteran "was show business and love personified". Actor George Takei, best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, called Channing one of Broadway's "greatest lights".

The daughter of newspaper editor George Channing and his wife Adelaide, Channing was born in January 1921 and grew up in Seattle, Washington.
