'Tunisia is finished': smugglers profit as downturn drives European exodus

Tuesday 07:01 GMT

We see Europe, a continent where democracy and individual freedoms are valued, job opportunities exist – so of course, it’s an attraction.”

Since the closure of numerous migrant routes from Libya, a cadre of people smugglers – some established, others less so – seems to have taken root in Tunisia, preying on the country’s most desperate people. However, given the marked increase of Tunisians among recent waves of migrants, it is clear that something else is going on, beyond simple geographic displacement.

Stalkers using bugging devices and spyware to monitor victims

Wednesday 07:01 GMT

Stalkers are monitoring their victims’ movements and conversations using bugging and tracking devices as well as spyware and covert phone apps easily bought online, victims’ groups have warned.

These devices and software allow stalkers to track their victims, listen to their phone calls, or turn on their computer’s camera remotely to watch them – and are sold so cheaply on popular websites and stores that stalking is becoming “legitimised”, the groups have warned... Tracking devices and technology hacking were used in more than 200 stalking cases reported to the National Stalking Helpline last year, though the real number is likely to be much higher due to the covert nature of the devices and software. “[The devices] are really easy to get, they’re really easy to use,” said Clare Elcombe Webber, the manager of the helpline, which is run by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust.

Why Trying to Be Less Awkward Never Works

Wednesday 07:01 GMT

Awkward moments like these can be panic-inducing, and judging by the number of books and articles and videos on awkwardness that have popped up in recent years, this is far from a unique worry.

Think of that awkward elevator ride you shared with your company’s C.E.O. and your mind blanked on the simplest things because you were trying so hard to think of something to say. (How do elevator buttons work again?). “We only have a limited ability to focus on things, which is why driving and talking on a cellphone is not a good idea, because it takes your focus away,” said Ms. Beilock, whose research on explicit monitoring theory helped inspire her 2010 book on the subject, “Choke.”

Kremlin critic's name gets snow cleared

Friday 17:17 GMT

Moscow residents say they have found that the only way to get the council to clear snow is to write the name of opposition leader Alexei Navalny on it.

Posts on Facebook and Twitter have received thousands of likes, after disgruntled residents took to social media, saying that they tried spray-painting "Navalny" on the city's deep snow out of frustration at the authorities' slowness in removing them. One user said the move prompted immediate reaction and that council workers removed the graffiti "within hours".
