It’s almost impossible to function without the big five tech giants

It was this comprehensive blocking technology that really revealed the ubiquity of the tech giants’ grip on our networked world.

It’s not easy to cut yourself off from a system that links you to friends, family and employer, all of whom expect you to be contactable and sometimes get upset when you’re not. The technophobic tendency to attribute this failure to lack of moral fibre should be resisted.

Hackers target democratic institutions in Europe, says Microsoft

Microsoft has accused Russian hacking group Fancy Bear of launching a series of recent attacks against think tanks in Europe.

Microsoft warned in a blog post on Wednesday that hackers attempted to breach accounts at several prominent European think tanks and non-profit organizations in late 2018. The tech giant said it had detected attacks targeting 104 staff accounts at the German Council on Foreign Relations and European offices of Aspen Institute and the German Marshall Fund.

'We won't be war profiteers': Microsoft workers protest $480m army contract

Microsoft workers are calling on their employer to cancel a $480m contract to provide the US army with augmented reality (AR) headsets, saying they “do not want to become war profiteers”. “We did not sign up to develop weapons, and we demand a say in how our work is used,” reads a petition being circulated inside the company, a copy of which was published on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

“We always appreciate feedback from employees and have many avenues for employee voices to be heard,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in response to the petition.

Microsoft staff: Do not use HoloLens for war

At least 50 Microsoft employees have demanded the company back out of a deal with the US military to provide augmented reality technology.

Microsoft's chief executive Satya Nadella is expected to announced HoloLens 2 at an event in Barcelona on Sunday, ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show. The letter demands Microsoft cancel the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) contract, stop developing “any and all” weapons technologies, and draft a public policy statement on the matter.
