As the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., stokes the national debate over firearms, it may be easy to overlook another major development in the gun world this week. One of the nation’s oldest and largest gun makers, Remington, said it was nearing a bankruptcy filing.

Sure, it's a testament to the power of nostalgia, but more accurately, it's a sign that branding, when done right, is as durable as a classic Nokia phone.

That certainly helps explain Nokia's surprising recent success; the older Nokia phones had a reputation for being bulletproof, which generated a whole series of memes. The "Nokia" brand is no longer even the same company after it was purchased (and then essentially destroyed) by Microsoft.

Gun makers protected by 2005 law limiting liability

A federal law passed in 2005 largely limits liability for gun manufacturers whose weapons are used in a crime such as Wednesday’s slaying of 17 people at a Florida high school.

Gun companies, including Sturm Ruger (RGR) and American Outdoor Brands (AOBC), briefly rallied a day after the Florida shooting on speculation that short-term sales would rise in anticipation of a potential tightening of gun regulations.
