Roberts assures audience Supreme Court will serve ‘one nation,’ not one party or interest

Wednesday 09:58 GMT

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. for the first time Tuesday addressed the recent bitter partisan fight over new Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh and the Supreme Court, seeking to “assure” an audience that the court will serve “one nation” and not “one party or one interest.” Before being interviewed by a law professor at the University of Minnesota, Roberts said he needed to speak to the “contentious events in Washington in recent weeks,” and to “emphasize how the judicial branch is, must be, very different.”

Chief Justice Roberts Emphasizes Supreme Court’s Independence

Thursday 00:35 GMT

Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday sought to quell some of the furor surrounding the Supreme Court and the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, telling a college audience that the court remains an independent, nonpolitical institution in which justices are committed to working together.

When Mr. Stein asked how the chief justice’s job was different from that of his colleagues, the chief justice deadpanned, “Well, the most important difference is that I get 10,000 extra dollars.”
