Andrew Johnson: The unfortunate president

Monday 14:32 GMT

Presidential historians have been making a list ... and our Mo Rocca may have the winner: . No survey of forgotten presidents (such as James Buchanan, Chester A. Arthur or Millard Fillmore) would be complete without our 17th president, Andrew Johnson.

His presidency would end in disgrace, but in 1864, when Republican President Abraham Lincoln was running for re-election during the Civil War and needed a running mate who'd balance the ticket, Tennessee's Andrew Johnson was his pick.

Major intelligence, strategic failures helped spur US soldiers' deaths in Niger, report says

Tuesday 02:26 GMT

A new report details how a worldwide oversight in the War on Terror helped lead to the deaths of four U.S. service members in Niger last October — the largest loss of American troops during combat in Africa since the 1993 “Black Hawk Down” debacle in Somalia.

According to the report Sunday in The New York Times, a series of intelligence failures and strategic miscalculations left the Americans far from base, in territory of Islamic extremists longer than planned, with no backup or air support, on a mission in a remote stretch of West Africa that they had not been expected to perform.
