“The unfortunate thing is that as ISIS compresses and Iran moves in, it is trying to establish this continuous empire surrounding the Middle East from the south in Yemen but also trying to create a land bridge from Iran to Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Gaza,” Netanyahu said.

Today 06:05 GMT

Israel bombed 18 targets in Gaza overnight, killing two Palestinian teens, after an explosion wounded four of its soldiers on the border with the Palestinian enclave.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the Popular Resistance Committees, one of the smaller armed groups in Gaza, had detonated the bomb that wounded the soldiers. It is longstanding Israel policy to hold Hamas responsible for violence that emanates from the tiny strip of blockaded land sandwiched between Israel and Egypt.

In Pursuit of Peace, Trump Generates Rare Friction With Netanyahu

Friday 18:12 GMT

Even before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s legal setback this week, a rare fissure had opened up between him and President Trump.

The White House rebutted reports that he and the Americans had discussed annexing parts of the West Bank, and Mr. Trump voiced fresh concerns about Israel’s openness to a peace accord. White House officials insisted on Wednesday that the recommendation of bribery and fraud charges against Mr. Netanyahu would have “no impact on the timing or content” of a peace plan.

In Netanyahu’s Israel, the Divisiveness Is Now All About Him

Friday 21:53 GMT

Mr. Netanyahu’s Israel is as polarized as it has been in generations, and under his lengthy tenure, the national conversation has become steadily more toxic.

The bet paid off eventually but it accelerated the trend of support for Israel breaking down along American partisan lines — a dangerous shift for American Jews and Israel alike. He placed a large bet on the Republican Party’s coming to power in the United States, embracing Mitt Romney then Donald Trump, and pointedly snubbing President Barack Obama.
