Guatemala pulls out of UN-backed anti-corruption commission

09-Jan-2019

Guatemala will end a UN-sponsored anti-corruption commission, which has been investigating high-ranking members of the country's government and President Jimmy Morales' campaign financing.

For more than a decade, the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) has had the power to conduct independent investigations in cooperation with the country's prosecutors. Foreign Minister Sandra Jovel announced Guatemala would abruptly pull out of the CICIG eight months earlier than expected after meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday.

Today 06:59 GMT

Archaeologists have discovered an ancient steam bath that the Maya likely used for religious rituals — and possibly relaxation — more than 2,500 years ago.

The steam bath, discovered in the ancient Maya city of Nakum in what is now Guatemala, had fragmented ceramic vessels and obsidian tools in it — artifacts that were possibly used for rituals, said excavation co-leader Jaros?aw ?ra?ka, an assistant professor of New World archeology at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.
