Warplanes pushed to new limits thanks to communications technology

The newest generation of warplanes and decades-old fighters from three branches of the armed forces took to the skies over the Mojave Desert for one of the largest testing exercises of its kind.

CBS News climbed into the tail of a KC-135 tanker for an exclusive look at "Orange Flag," a mock battle in the sky designed to push more than two dozen fighter jets to their technical limits. Modern planes, like the F-35 and F-22 are essentially flying computers, but they have to share data, like battle plans and enemy coordinates, seamlessly with older jets, like the F-16.
