Sanders leads crowded 2020 Democrats field in total fundraising

17-Apr-2019

In the crowded field of Democrats jockeying for the party’s 2020 presidential nomination, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has raised more money than his rivals, with more of it coming from small-dollar donors and more from outside his home state.

The field of candidates has since swelled, with 18 Democrats vying to win the party’s nomination to challenge President Donald Trump in November 2020. Many Democrats have touted their support among so-called “small dollar” donors, those who give less than $200.

'Disastrous' lack of diversity in AI industry perpetuates bias, study finds

Thursday 00:35 GMT

Lack of diversity in the artificial intelligence field has reached “a moment of reckoning,” according to new findings published by a New York University research center. A “diversity disaster” has contributed to flawed systems that perpetuate gender and racial biases found the survey, published by the AI Now Institute, of more than 150 studies and reports.

The biases of systems built by the AI industry can be largely attributed to the lack of diversity within the field itself, the report said.

UCLA’s Katelyn Ohashi out to punctuate viral season with final statement

Thursday 09:54 GMT

For as much attention as Ohashi gets on floor exercise, she is also ranked second nationally on the balance beam and leads a Bruins squad that is the defending national champion and has lost only one meet this season.

Kondos Field and Wieber felt the pressure going into this season of seeing whether Ohashi could live up to 2018, when she became the NCAA floor champion with a routine that had more than 90m views.

The Morning Risk Report: EU, Canada Vow to Fight New U.S. Sanctions on Cuba

Friday 15:25 GMT

The waiver from part of the 1996 Helms-Burton Act had prevented U.S. nationals whose property was seized by the Castro regime in Cuba after 1959 from suing for damages in U.S. courts.

The European Union and Canada said they were prepared to defend their companies’ interests in Cuba before the World Trade Organization, after the Trump administration opened the door to billions of dollars in lawsuits against foreign firms that do business there.

Accidental Presidents, Part 3: How two assassinations torpedoed civil rights in America

Sunday 08:58 GMT

How America squandered the post-Civil War opportunity to advance civil rights is a tale of two Republican assassinations.

Johnson opposed almost all civil rights legislation – the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, and the 14th Amendment forbidding states to restrict the rights of citizens – and with the exception of slavery, resurrected just about every vestige of the political and economic system that would continue to disenfranchise black Americans for more than a century.

The zero-waste revolution: how a new wave of shops could end excess packaging

Monday 06:04 GMT

The dilemma for the new breed of zero-waste shops is that they want the supermarkets to see the light, but they don’t want them to get so good at it that they drive the little shops out of business.

The new generation of zero-waste stores are a delight and have the potential to change the way we shop and help revive the high street, but Bird makes me realise that the charity shops that many people see as disfiguring town centres and spelling decline for high streets are themselves performing a zero-waste function, ensuring that clothes and other goods are reused rather than sent to landfill.

Democratic presidential candidates divided over impeaching Trump

Today 06:04 GMT

(Reuters) - A group of Democratic presidential candidates were divided on Monday over whether Republican President Donald Trump should be impeached, reflecting a broader split in the Democratic Party over how to react to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report into Russian election meddling.
