Sexy Siri, you made a fool of everyone

For all you wonderful people born after "the end of history," when cultural references prior to one's one own existence still mattered, a word on that headline: "Sexy Siri" is a nod and a wink to The Beatles' 1968 song "Sexy Sadie," and not merely because it's a neat alliteration.

He or she "broke the rules," they sang, "made a fool of everyone," and, comes the warning line, "… you'll get yours yet, however big you think you are."

Debt guarantee tangle: China's private firms hit by default contagion

The collapse in China of a complex web of debt guarantees involving several private firms highlights risks in its financial system and opens up a potentially hazardous front for an economy in the grip of its slowest growth in nearly three decades.

Among the 28 firms are Shandong Dahai Group and Shandong Jinmao Textile Chemical Group, which were on the 2018 top 500 best-run private enterprises in China.

Africa's debt crises not the fault of creditors alone

Lucy Corkin, business manager at Rand Merchant Bank Africa, points out that Beijing regularly pardons a certain amount of debt at the triannual China-Africa Cooperation Forum, introduced in 2000.

Between 2000 and 2017, Beijing granted loans to African states and companies amounting to $143 billion (€126.5 billion), turning it into Africa's largest creditor.
