Gender gap helps keep Democrats in front — CBS News poll

Monday 03:20 GMT

Democrats are being helped by a gender gap in the race for the House in these key districts: Men are backing Republican candidates by 7 percentage points, while women are supporting Democrats by 12 points.

Also, Democrats are partly relying on new voters — more than one in five of those backing Democrats did not vote in either the 2010 or 2014 midterm elections. Black voters' strong support for Democrats is in part because these voters see the Democratic Party working for them, and the Republican party against them.

EU to Boost Support for Central African Republic as Russia Expands Its Role

Tuesday 15:27 GMT

European foreign ministers agreed Monday to expand the bloc’s support for security and armed forces in the Central African Republic, part of an effort to counter what diplomats fear is a growing Russian role there.

Russia and the Central African Republic signed a military deal in August that paved the way for Moscow to step up training of the nation’s poorly equipped armed forces. Moscow delivered light arms to its security forces earlier this year and said it had deployed five military instructors and 170 civilian ones to train them, a move the government said would bolster their bilateral military cooperation.

Trump administration aims to expand religious exemptions for birth control coverage

Friday 17:17 GMT

Women’s health advocates warn that the Trump administration is set to try tightening access to birth control by broadening religious exemptions for companies providing health insurance.

The Trump administration’s first attempt to broaden religious exemptions would allow any company to apply not to provide birth control on the basis of religious conviction, and would allow all but publicly traded companies to apply for a “moral conviction” to avoid providing birth control.
