1 in 5 Americans have more credit-card debt than savings

Thursday 16:23 GMT

One in five Americans say they have more credit-card debt than they do in emergency savings, according to a report published Thursday from the personal-finance company Bankrate.

More than half (58%) said they had more in emergency savings funds than in credit-card debt, the highest percentage Bankrate has ever had, tied with the amount who said this in 2015. Financial experts typically recommend that all consumers have three to six months’ worth of expenses saved in an easy-to-access emergency fund, to guard against any unexpected expenses.

Thursday 16:24 GMT

The City of Brantford has declared a state of emergency and called for an immediate evacuation after heavy rain and unseasonable warmth triggered severe flooding for areas near the Grand River in southwestern Ontario, which runs through the city.

Roughly 2,200 homes and up to 4,900 people have been impacted in the affected areas, City of Brantford officials told CTV News on Wednesday. Residents living in the areas of Holmedale, Old West Brant, and Eagle Palace are being ordered to leave their homes immediately.
