Today 04:16 GMT

The top U.S. commander for the Middle East said Tuesday that additional troops will arrive in Afghanistan in a matter of days or weeks following President Donald Trump’s decision to boost the American military effort in that country.

A Taliban resurgence, along with the growing threat of ISIS, was enough to convince the U.S. and Afghanistan governments to reach an agreement that would keep American troops in the country.

Pakistan finds itself on the defensive in Trump's Afghan war strategy

Today 04:16 GMT

It feels like a lifetime ago, but it was just December, a week after his election, that then-President-elect Trump was lavishing praise on Pakistan, calling it a “fantastic place … doing amazing work.”

As Trump said in outlining his new strategy in South Asia, things look different from behind a desk in the Oval Office, and his views toward Pakistan seem to have changed since that strange phone call with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Today 04:16 GMT

(Reuters) - City councilors in Charlottesville, Virginia, voted unanimously on Tuesday to cover two statues of Confederate war heroes in black fabric after ejecting spectators from a chaotic council meeting as residents demanded answers over how a recent white nationalist rally turned deadly.

When council members returned to the chamber after spectators were removed, they voted to cover the statues of General Robert E. Trump suggests he will pardon controversial Arizona sheriff at Phoenix rally

Today 04:16 GMT

President Trump on Tuesday stopped short of pardoning former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio but signaled to a boisterous rally crowd here that such a move could be coming soon, saying “I think he’s going to be just fine.” “I’m not going to do it tonight because I don’t want to cause any controversy,” Trump said of Arpaio, who was convicted last month of criminal contempt for ignoring a federal judge’s order to stop detaining people because he merely suspected them of being undocumented immigrants.

Military leaders consolidate power in Trump administration

Connected by their faith in order and global norms, these military leaders are rapidly consolidating power throughout the executive branch as they counsel a volatile president.

Bannon, Trump’s former chief White House strategist, who clashed with several military leaders over policy.

Trump will not pardon former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio at Phoenix rally, White House says

Today 04:16 GMT

President Trump will not move to pardon former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio during the president's campaign rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, a White House spokeswoman said.

Trump's public flirtation with pardoning Arpaio prompted fierce criticism from Democrats and immigrant rights groups which have long denounced Arpaio's immigration enforcement tactics while serving as sheriff of Maricopa County. Trump had said in an interview with Fox News last week that he was “seriously considering” a pardon for Arpaio, an immigration hardliner who was found guilty of criminal contempt last year for defying a court order not to detain suspects without a reasonable suspicion of a crime.
