Thomas Sowell: The dangers of the 'social justice' vision

17-Mar-2019

Where, instead, there is simply a humanitarian desire to see the less fortunate have better prospects for a better life, the ‘social justice’ argument is both unnecessary and an impediment to joining forces toward that end with others who do not happen to share the implicit assumption of that particular social vision.

Ending climate change requires the end of capitalism. Have we got the stomach for it?

Monday 16:20 GMT

Climate change activism is increasingly the domain of the young, such as 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, the unlikely face of the school strike for climate movement, which has seen many thousands of children walk out of school to demand that their parents’ generation takes responsibility for leaving them a planet to live on.

The need to keep the wheels of capitalism well-oiled takes precedence even against a backdrop of fires, floods and hurricanes.

Why so many people leave London

Tuesday 02:25 GMT

It's no secret that London has a very successful economy, not just compared with the rest of the UK but with other international cities too.

As a result the population of London and the urban area surrounding it has grown significantly, increasing by 1.1 million between 2008 and 2017 to 10 million people. Many more people pack their bags and leave the capital for elsewhere in England and Wales than make the journey the other way.

Germany named drug use capital following Europe-wide sewage study

Tuesday 18:11 GMT

Germany has topped a Europe-wide study for crystal meth and amphetamine use following close examination of the country’s wastewater.

The availability of cocaine on Europe's drug markets may be behind the increasing trend of use in some countries and possibly the drug's expansion into the Eastern Europe market, where it was not commonly used until recently, the study outlined. The drugs agency goes on to suggest that while the rise may be indicative of more people consuming cocaine, "it may also mean there is greater use of cocaine by the same people."

Is Beto O’Rourke the selfie-politician and metaphor for our times?

Wednesday 17:16 GMT

To the contrary, we now know that O’Rourke was involved in a group with some rather shady dealings like hacking and “stealing credit card numbers to pay for long-distance telephone service, violating copyright laws and hacking into computers.”

If you recall, many an Internet start-up company has been flush with cash without producing any real products – let alone returns on investment. Beto, as he calls himself, is a sad metaphor for our times – the self-absorbed, empty Internet start-up age.

DAVID BOSSIE: PELOSI WILL LEAD TRUMP IMPEACHMENT FIGHT – DON’T BELIEVE HER DENIALS. As campaigning for next year’s Democratic presidential primaries gets underway, it is simply jaw-dropping to contrast the no-nonsense style of President Trump and his hugely successful pro-growth capitalist agenda with the miserably weak field of socialist Democrat White House wannabees.

In the speech, Reagan laid out the stark contrast between big government and individual liberty, and between capitalism and socialism.
