Students stage White House protest as Trump explores gun reform

Tuesday 19:08 GMT

Dozens of teenage students lay down on the pavement in front of the White House on Monday to demand presidential action on gun control after 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Florida.

These are the three worst incidents:. 79%: Proportion of Americans who favour banning assault-style weapons, according to a recent poll. 84%: Democratic voters who said that gun laws should be ‘a lot’ or ‘somewhat’ stricter than at present. 72%: Republican voters who agreed that ‘the benefits of gun ownership outweigh the risks’. The US president has been criticised for his tepid response to the shooting and his past vigorous backing of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Thursday 03:22 GMT

North Korean officials cancelled a secret meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence during the 2018 Winter Olympics, US officials said on Tuesday.

"North Korea dangled a meeting in hopes of the vice president softening his message, which would have ceded the world stage for their propaganda," said Nick Ayers, Pence's chief of staff. "This administration will stand in the way of Kim's desire to whitewash their murderous regime with nice photo ops at the Olympics.
