California woman arrested for elder, animal abuse after dad, 96, found in home with up to 700 rats, cops say

A California woman was arrested after authorities discovered her 96-year-old father and multiple pets living inside a home in conditions described as "not fit for human living" with up to 700 rats inside, officials said Tuesday.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Catherine Ann Vandermaesen, 65, was arrested last Thursday on suspicion of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor animal abuse after authorities visited the home in Ojai, located northwest of Los Angeles.

A female Australian rules football star lashed out this week against crude and disparaging comments made about a photo of her in mid-air kicking the ball.

'Cowardly grubs': Scott Morrison condemns sexist remarks about Tayla Harris

The Australian prime minister has weighed in to the controversy around sexist comments posted online about an image of the Australian rules footballer Tayla Harris, labelling those responsible “cowardly grubs”.

The photo of Harris soaring mid-air following through on a kick 40m out from goal was posted to Channel Seven’s AFL Facebook page, was removed after a number of sexist comments and then reposted by Channel Seven with an apology.

West Virginia attorney general takes unique approach to clergy abuse

The Attorney General of West Virginia filed a civil suit against the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese in what appears to be a rather unique approach to combatting the scourge of clergy sex abuse.

West Virginia is a state where local government has the authority to file criminal complaints, so the attorney general office filed the case under the jurisdiction available to it, which is only civil suits.

Arizona woman charged with abusing children, forcing them to appear in YouTube series

An Arizona woman is facing charges of abusing her seven children and forcing them to appear in her YouTube series which was seen by millions of people.

DCS reports they were told the children were taken out of school to film the YouTube series, which had more than 242 million views. Arizona’s Department of Child Services removed the seven children from the home.

Sophie Jones: Sheffield United Women forward banned for racial abuse

Sheffield United Women forward Sophie Jones has been banned for five games after being found guilty of racially abusing Tottenham player Renee Hector.

Jones has had her contract terminated by Sheffield United, who said that the forward "maintains her innocence and is disappointed with the FA's decision". Hector claimed she "received some monkey noises" from an opponent during a Championship match on 6 January.

Pope rejects resignation of cardinal convicted of sex abuse cover-up

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon, one of France's most senior Catholic clergymen, said on Tuesday that the pope rejected his resignation following his conviction in a sex abuse-related case.

In a similar case in Australia last year, the pope accepted the resignation of Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson after he was convicted of covering up abuse. Barbarin and his co-defendants argued they did not know about the abuse until it became public.
