Mystery in Salt Lake City: where have hundreds of homeless people gone?

Saturday 03:20 GMT

The Salt Lake City police chief, Mike Brown, said he had visited parks and the Jordan river, which threads its way to the Great Salt Lake and has homeless camps dotted along its banks, but he hadn’t seen an influx from downtown.

While the country’s most prominent homeless crises are in coastal cities – New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles – the mountain-ringed capital of the Mormon church has also long struggled to house or, in the view of some, has politely ignored its homeless population.

Coming Home to a Shipping Container

Saturday 03:20 GMT

The container wasn’t orange when they went with Mr. Steele to pick it out, but as Ms. Volker said, “If you’re going to do this thing, you might as well announce it’s a container.”

Shipping containers, as we know them today, are the brainchild of Malcom Purcell McLean, a longshoreman from New Jersey credited with revolutionizing the shipping industry. Dubbed the Father of Containerization, Mr. McLean came up with the idea for shipping large cargo boxes one day in 1937, as he waited to unload his truck carrying tobacco barrels.

Company’s ban against gay weddings is akin to ‘white applicants only’ sign, judge says

Saturday 03:20 GMT

This week, Chief U.S. District Court John Tunheim dismissed the case, ruling that the Larsens’s wish to turn down same-sex clients was “conduct akin to a ‘White Applicants Only’ sign,” according to the Star Tribune.

The organization is behind Jack Phillips, the Colorado cake maker who sued for the right to refuse to make wedding cakes for same-sex weddings. That legal challenge, which like the Larsens’s case is framed as a fight for of artistic expression, will be heard before the U.S. Supreme Court in the fall.
