Congress sounds bipartisan alarm as Trump deals on ZTE

Even as the Trump administration reached a deal Friday to reduce sanctions on the Chinese telecom giant ZTE, Congress has shown rare unity in working to prevent the president from giving in to the foreign-backed company in a way that would compromise national security.

Trump earlier this week floated the idea of a $1.3 billion fine with the promise that ZTE will reorganize its board in exchange for ZTE being allowed to sell its phones in the U.S.. “And very, very strict security rules,” Trump added on Tuesday. “And I also envision they will have to buy a big percentage of their equipment and parts from American companies.”

Search continues for individuals connected to Canada restaurant explosion, authorities say

Authorities said they remained on the lookout for two people in connection with an explosion on Thursday from an “improvised explosive device” at an Indian restaurant in Canada.

Opioids are starting to be found in mussels near Canadian waters

Researchers at the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife have found traces of oxycodone in mussels in Puget Sound – which is about 200 kilometres south of the Canadian border.

Study finds nearly a quarter of Ontario opioid prescriptions exceeded guidelines. “It seems like the prescriptions for opioids are high enough that it’s starting to come out in the waters here at least in the really you know, dense urban corridors,” Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Jennifer Lanksbury told Global News.
