The Guardian view on Bangladesh: when charity goes wrong

Tuesday 19:06 GMT

The generous outrage of women in the rich world must be harnessed to help their sisters at the other end of the supply chain, where it weighs the heaviest.

The T-shirts made in Bangladesh will ultimately sell for £19.60, of which a little more than half, £11.60, will go to Comic Relief, to help champion equality for women. The celebrities who promote them, and whom the T-shirts in turn promote with their slogan “I wanna be a Spice Girl”, are well-paid; the women who make them are paid around 35p an hour and expected to sew up to 2,000 in the course of a working day, which is anything from eight to 16 hours long.

You can still like Gillian Anderson, even if she makes a great Thatcher

Tuesday 19:06 GMT

The apparent issue is that Anderson is too hot to play Thatcher, and her beauty will humanise the reviled politician while making Anderson herself less likable.

The likelihood of him instructing Anderson to play Thatcher as an aspirational #girlboss seems as unlikely as the highbrow actor agreeing to do so.

House Judiciary Democrat says Justice Kavanaugh will 'likely' be investigated for perjury

Tuesday 19:06 GMT

A freshman Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee told constituents the panel will “likely” investigate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for purportedly committing perjury during his confirmation hearings last fall.

KAVANAUGH SWORN IN AS 114TH SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, HOURS AFTER SENATE VOTES TO CONFIRM . But with Democrats assuming the House majority earlier this month, and with it the power to investigate and subpoena witnesses, the Kavanaugh controversy has largely taken a backseat to other Trump-related issues like his tax returns and alleged Russia connections.

Howard Schultz, former Starbucks CEO, exploring 2020 run as an independent – reports

Tuesday 19:06 GMT

Howard Schultz, the founder and former CEO of Starbucks, is exploring an independent bid for the presidency, according to US media reports.

Disincentives for an independent bid, which have previously dissuaded Bloomberg from pursuing an independent bid in two previous election cycles, include fears that an independent candidate would draw support away from the Democratic candidate, thus aiding Trump’s re-election bid in 2020.

Why are wages so low for garment workers in Bangladesh?

Tuesday 19:06 GMT

The legal minimum wage for garment workers in the country is 8,000 taka (£73.85) a month, slightly less than the amount received by workers spoken to by the Guardian.

It is little surprise that workers at the Bangladesh factory where the T-shirts were made were paid less than the local living wage. Countries such as Bangladesh are popular places in which to operate because they offer cheap labour alongside expertise in clothing manufacture.
