Tuesday 17:15 GMT

Mayor Bill de Blasio cited his "socialistic impulse" in describing an ideal world where New York City government has control over all land and buildings in his city.

“I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be,” de Blasio said in a wide-ranging interview with New York Magazine. “I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs.”

Opinion: The Titiev trial — a Chechen circus

Tuesday 17:15 GMT

A "show trial" is the only way to describe the proceedings against Russian human rights activist Oyub Titiev in Chechnya.

Honor plays an important role in Chechen society and it is therefore of significant interest at the "witness hearing" because many people knew Titiev as a man of integrity. This is a man who prays five times a day and obeyed Ramadan, such is the practice of a devout Muslim; that he was helpful, modest, he abstains from smoking and drinking.

AU wants to top up its own kitty in overall reform bid

Tuesday 03:20 GMT

African Union chairperson Paul Kagame is pushing its 55 members to pay their dues as part of his bid to steer reform of the donor-dependent body.

Even those who have been contributing would be much more encouraged if they realize that the member countries of the AU themselves are committed to contributing to the upkeep of the AU. But now as it is, the AU appears to be financially cash-strapped and virtually a beggar organization and therefore this is a very good move, which should be sustained and encouraged.

NASA unveils stunning pictures of galaxy that looks like Star Trek Enterprise

Tuesday 17:15 GMT

NASA has unveiled images of a galaxy cluster known as Abell 1033 that, according to the space agency, has an "uncanny resemblance to many of the depictions of the fictional Starship Enterprise from Star Trek." The galaxy cluster is 1.6 billion light-years away from Earth and these structures "are the largest objects in the Universe held together by gravity," NASA noted.

"This suggests that the electrons have been re-energized, presumably when the jets interact with turbulence or shock waves in the hot gas," NASA wrote, adding: "The energetic electrons producing the radio emission will normally lose substantial amounts of energy over tens to hundreds of millions of years as they radiate."
