115 reported killed in attack on Mali village

Militia fighters descended on a village in central Mali before dawn Saturday, killing at least 115 people in the latest deadly attack blamed on an ethnic militia, local authorities said.

The massacre in the village of Ogossogou left the village chief and his grandchildren dead in the ethnic Peulh community, according to a local official who had received detailed accounts from the remote area. UN formally asks Canada to extend Mali mission past end of July to October. The victims “included pregnant women, young children and the elderly,” according to Abdoul Aziz Diallo, president of a Peulh group known as Tabital Pulaaku.

U.S.-backed forces proclaimed the capture of Islamic State‘s last territory in Syria on Saturday, eliminating its rule over a self-proclaimed “caliphate,” but the jihadists remain a threat from sleeper cells around the world.

“We announce today the destruction of the so-called Islamic State organization and the end of its ground control in its last pocket in Baghouz,” Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) general commander Mazloum Abdi told a victory ceremony.

The dispute over Kashmir sparked the first two of three wars between India and Pakistan after both countries became independent of the British Empire in 1947. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his "greetings" and "best wishes" to the Pakistani people ahead of Saturday's celebrations.

President Donald Trump discussed the economy with corporate leaders on Thursday, as he signed an executive order on education and tweeted that it’s time for the U.S. to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Saying universities are using so-called safe spaces to “restrict free thought,” Trump signed an executive order promoting freedom of speech on college campuses. He said $35 billion in federal research funding is at risk of being lost if public institutions don’t comply with the First Amendment and private schools fail to live up to their own free-speech policies.
