It was something to see that man going down the broad imposing steps, tricked out in the white suit, a flowing black cape, a big, broad brimmed black hat worn at a tilt, the stick, walking carefully but with a certain flair, a certain élan, because he knew he was being watched because he was, let’s face it, Tom Wolfe.

On top of that he strutted through the world like some crazed, antique peacock—the faded vanilla suits, the high-collar shirts, polka-dot ties, the socks and handkerchief, the spats.

Top German companies ramp up US lobbying practices

Last year, the German drug maker spent $10.5 million lobbying the Trump administration and Congress, the largest amount by far of any DAX 30 firm Bayer, which was in the midst of a takeover bid for US chemical and seed company Monsanto, invested 14 percent more in lobbying in 2017 than the previous year.

Germany's largest public companies increased their efforts to influence the US government in President Trump's first year in office, a DW analysis has found.

Santa Fe High School shooting: Witnesses describe frantic scene

SANTA FE, Texas -- Students who witnessed a shooting at a Texas high school Friday morning described a frantic scene, with teachers yelling for students to run as shots rang out.

Harris County Sherriff Ed Gonzalez Harris County said there "could be 8 to 10 fatalities" from the shooting at Santa Fe High School, about 30 miles southeast of Houston. Another described seeing the shooter wearing a trench coat and armed with a sawed off shotgun before barricading themselves inside their classroom.
