'We're not allowed to talk about it': inside the world of US sports betting

Saturday 05:09 GMT

Korem wasn’t the only fan casually betting on games; like a marijuana cloud hanging over a music festival, sports betting has been an unmistakable, if hazy, denominator of America’s prolific sports culture even before last year’s supreme court ruling left its legality up to individual states.

“I’ve always been interested in sports betting, in particular because it’s ingrained in the sports world and in America, sports is huge,” Korem said by phone. “We all know that there’s all this money being bet on sports” – the American Gambling Association estimated that illegal sports bets totaled as absurdly high as $500bn – “but we’re not allowed to talk about it.”

Dirty lies: how the car industry hid the truth about diesel emissions

Saturday 05:09 GMT

John German had not been looking to make a splash when he commissioned an examination of pollution from diesel cars back in 2013.

The software detected when emissions tests were being run, and pollution controls – components inside the engine that reduce emissions, sometimes at the expense of performance or fuel consumption – worked fine under those circumstances. But outside the lab, the controls were switched off or turned way down, and NOx levels shot up as high as 40 times the legal limit.

Voting marathon over SNC-Lavalin scandal ends, 30 hours later

Saturday 05:09 GMT

The record-setting House of Commons marathon voting session over the SNC-Lavalin scandal has come to an end, more than 30 hours after it began.

The longest yet voting marathon of this Parliament ended with relatively little fanfare, except for some jeers from the opposition benches, and applause from bleary-eyed MPs. The continuous voting wiped out more than a day of government business, while the SNC-Lavalin controversy is set to wage on.

NFL paid under $10M to settle Colin Kaepernick grievance

Saturday 04:14 GMT

Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, the NFL stars who alleged the league’s teams colluded to keep them off the field after they led protests during the national anthem, will receive less than $10 million to settle grievances with the league, according to people briefed on the deal.

The settlement is far less than the tens of millions of dollars Mr. Kaepernick, especially, would have likely been owed if his grievance had prevailed.
