This Nairobi attack reminds me that tit-for-tat terror never succeeds

If we don’t change, if we continue with the terror tit-for-tat, we will be creating yet another set of these manmade disasters.

I don’t see any other way around this. Writing for the Guardian in 2013 shortly after the Nairobi Westgate Mall attack that left 71 dead, I argued that al-Shabaab was the creation, in part, of the Ethiopian and US governments. There was a small window of hope when Somalia had started reconstituting itself under the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) after the fall of the western-sponsored dictator Siad Barre and the anarchy that ensued.

Mayor of Gdansk dies of stab wounds after attack

Poland's health minister told local media that Gdansk's mayor died in a hospital after being stabbed at a charity event.

In a spectator video from the event, the suspect is seen taking the microphone and addressing the crowd, claiming he had been wrongly jailed and tortured by the mayor's Civic Platform party. The assailant was swiftly pinned down by security personnel and then arrested by police.

Nairobi attack: hotel complex hit by gunfire and explosions

Police and anti-terrorist forces are fighting to regain control of a hotel and office complex in the centre of Kenyan capital after it was seized by gunmen.

The attack has many of the hallmarks of a terrorist operation and is being described as a terrorist incident by police at the scene. According to some media reports, al-Shabaab, the Islamist extremist organisation based in neighbouring Somalia, has already claimed responsibility.

Kenyan president says Nairobi attack is over after all militants killed

Kenya’s president has said security forces have killed all four militants who stormed a hotel and office complex in Nairobi, in an attack that killed at least 14 people.

Tuesday’s attack came exactly three years after an al-Shabaab attack on a Kenyan military base in El Adde in Somalia, in which about 140 Kenya soldiers were killed.

Supreme Court upholds appellate decision on Burn Pit lawsuits

The Supreme Court has rejected appeals from scores of military veterans and private contractors who claim their health problems are linked to their exposure to open burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The justices on Monday left in place a federal appeals court ruling that more than 60 lawsuits over the burn pits could not go forward. The lawsuits charged that military contractor Kellogg, Brown, and Root (KBR) dumped tires, batteries, medical waste, and other materials into open burn pits.
