Catholic leaders enter final week of debate on how to receive LGBT churchgoers

Today 19:04 GMT

Over the past three weeks, Catholic bishops have dissected and debated an array of flashpoint issues impacting young Catholics, and this week are slated to wrap up one of the most divisive: how the church should receive those within the gay and broader LGBT community.

Since Pope Francis uttered the phrase “who am I to judge?” in a July 2013 reference to gay Catholics, the comment has been viewed as a milestone moment and a potent break from tradition within the Church – igniting both commendation and criticism.

China's propaganda machine takes aim at American soybean farmers

Today 17:14 GMT

China's propaganda machine has taken aim at American soybean farmers as part of its high-stakes trade war with the Trump administration.

Stanley Chao, a business consultant who has written a book called "Selling to China," said it's not entirely surprising that China would try to take its trade arguments directly to American farmers, whose crops have been hit by Beijing's retaliatory tariffs. Chao noted that when a Chinese dissident won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize — chosen by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and an embarrassment for Beijing — China responded by placing propaganda ads in Scandinavian newspapers.

Fake discounts in stores fool some shoppers more than others—here’s why

Today 09:53 GMT

“The farther the nearest regular store is, the more sensitive consumers are to both real discounts and fake discounts,” Ngwe wrote.

A recent working paper from Donald Ngwe, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, looked at how effective fake discounts are in driving business at retailers. Fake “original” list prices are a common strategy among some retailers — especially with outlet or discount stores.

Investors weigh whether to ditch stocks for bonds as yields finally offer an alternative

Today 11:44 GMT

TINA is the acronym for “there is no alternative,” a market mantra that reflected the frustration of investors who saw no alternative to stocks in a post-financial crisis world dominated by ultralow government bond yields as the Federal Reserve and other global central banks embarked on asset-buying programs and other forms of extraordinary stimulus.

A selloff in Treasurys has seen longer-dated yields rise quickly in recent weeks, playing catch-up with a long-running rise in shorter-dated yields.

Police removed the remains of 63 foetuses from a Detroit funeral home and regulators closed the business amid a widening investigation of alleged improprieties at local funeral homes.

The Detroit police chief, James Craig, said officers found 36 foetuses in boxes and 27 others in freezers during Friday’s raid at the Perry Funeral Home. He said he was “stunned” by the discovery, which came a week after the remains of 11 infants were discovered in a ceiling at Detroit’s defunct Cantrell Funeral Home.

Parenting is hard work, but don't get discouraged -- remember this

Today 05:09 GMT

So, why would anyone take parenting advice from me? I’ve spent the last 11 years leading one of the world’s largest young adult ministries, and it has given me a unique view into the results of other parents’ parenting.

I have interacted with tens of thousands of twentysomethings who are fresh out of the nest, and I’ve seen the impact various parenting styles make on young adults. I’ve closely observed some extraordinary kids and sibling groups and have had the privilege of learning from their parents’ examples.
