Serial killer pleads guilty in Texas woman's 1994 death

A 78-year-old prisoner who says he killed about 90 people over nearly four decades as he moved around the country pleaded guilty to murder Thursday in the 1994 strangulation of a Texas woman.

Gary Ridgway, the so-called Green River killer who is serving life in prison, pleaded guilty to killing 49 women and girls, making him the deadliest serial killer in terms of confirmed kills, though he has said he likely killed more than 71 people.

Marriott hack: What we know about China’s alleged involvement, and what it could mean

U.S. officials said this week they believe China is behind a massive, years-long hack that involved the Marriott hotel chain.

The New York Times reported on China’s involvement in the Marriott hack on Tuesday, noting that the find is particularly concerning because the hotel is used by American government and military officials. Cybersecurity expert Ajay Sood, who is the general manager of Symantec Canada, told Global News that while China’s involvement is not confirmed, similar events have occurred in the past.

Capital punishment in the US continues to be in long-term decline, despite a slight increase in executions this year, according to a report released Friday by the nonpartisan Death Penalty Information Center.

Experts agree that as use of capital punishment and public opinion in support of the death penalty continues to decline, more states will likely abolish it. Washington state became the 20th state to abolish the death penalty this year when the state’s supreme court declared it unconstitutional, and three states with the death penalty currently have gubernatorial bans on the practice.

Healthcare to get $100bn boost as India aims to cut maternal deaths

Treasury prices fell Wednesday, pushing yields modestly higher, after investors cut back buying of U.S. government paper as stocks rose and Italian debt surged on fading jitters around geopolitical and trade tensions.

Williams, 45, and Thicke, 41, were sued by Gaye’s estate for copyright infringement and ordered to pay $7 million in 2015. But on Monday, U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt reduced that figure to $4.98 million, Billboard reported.
