Europe Is Feeling Trumped

Wednesday 09:58 GMT

Europe is now actively looking for ways to inflict pain on the Trump administration in the short term, and in the long term to ensure its increasing independence from the U.S.. From the White House, things look very different.

From this perspective, it seems arrogant of European countries to so casually brush aside the claims of longtime U.S. partners like Israel and the Gulf Arab states, and ridiculous of Europe to demand a veto power over actions the American government believes are necessary to the preservation of the global system.

21-May-2018

That said, keep hold of your “Miranda for president” T-shirt long enough and time might just make it a valued memento – more than can be said for much of the high street’s wares.

Unisex London label Blouse recently tapped into royal wedding hysteria with a commemorative “Just Harried” T-shirt, which was limited to just 50 prints allocated by Instagram ballot. “They are about wearing your heart not on your sleeve, but on your actual heart,” English says.

In India, Protecting Cows May Be Creating Killer Dogs

Most are farmers, many are Muslim, and on this terrifying dog menace, they blame politicians — specifically the Hindu-right politicians whose zeal to protect cows, they say, may have created killer dogs.

In the district hospital, the young children who barely escaped lie on their backs in metal cots, one after the other, blood-soaked bandages wrapped around their necks.

Island-Hopping: St. Helena

21-May-2018

"This island has been here in the middle of the South Atlantic, six days away from anywhere, for 500 years," said Governor Lisa Honan, the Queen's representative in St. Helena, a British island that's over 4,500 miles south of Great Britain.

"They decided to send Napoleon to the only place which can guarantee he has no-return ticket," said Michel Dancoisne-Martineau, the director of Longwood House, the home where Napoleon lived (and died) while on St. Helena. "This is the room, is very much THE room, the reason for the existence of the house, because this is the room where Napoleon died," Dancoisne-Martineau said.

Truth in a Post-Truth Era: Sandy Hook Families Sue Alex Jones, Conspiracy Theorist

Thursday 16:23 GMT

Alex Jones, an online conspiracy theorist whose InfoWars website is viewed by millions, seized on this agonizing recollection to repeat the bizarre falsehood that the 2012 shooting that killed 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., was an elaborate hoax invented by government-backed “gun-grabbers.” On his radio show, Mr. Jones said Mr. Heslin “needs to clarify…because the coroner said no, the parents weren’t allowed to have touched the kids or have seen the kids.”

Trump wades into abortion politics as midterms approach

Wednesday 09:58 GMT

Religious groups like the Catholic Medical Association approve of a series of actions Mr. Trump has taken, beginning with his appointment of judges who oppose abortion rights, including Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, and Trump's reinstatement of the global "gag rule" that bars federal funding for nongovernmental organizations that provide abortion referrals.

It's the latest evidence that as he frets over the Russia investigation and prepares for a planned summit with North Korea, Mr. Trump has also been focused on fulfilling campaign promises and tending to issues that galvanize his base: holding a series of events to rail against the dangers of illegal immigration, pulling out of the Iran-nuclear deal and wading anew into the fight over abortion rights.

Trevor Noah review – what if Harry and Meghan had 'a real black wedding'?

21-May-2018

Which is where he spends about half of tonight’s show – Noah’s laid-back optimism can take heavyweight subjects seriously, and still render them momentarily lighter than air.

He delivers a great line about the event’s supposed diversity (“Let me tell you something: a black cellist cancels itself out”), before imagining how it would have unfolded had it really been “a black wedding”. Yes, these jokes trade in broad stereotypes, and midway through Noah’s show I began to weary of his “white people do this, black people do that” shtick.

Still, near the end of talks involving the Trans Pacific Partnership, it often seemed like none of the parties would budge on certain elements, Heyman noted, but then there was compromise.

Out of Prison, Back to Congress Michael Grimm Is Trying on Staten Island

Monday 14:31 GMT

It was Staten Island reduced to an overstuffed hotel ballroom: a cannoli spread, the thick tang of hair products and undying loyalty to a man — well, two men — whom borough outsiders keep trying to tear down.

A patch of Trump Nation tacked onto a very blue city in the president’s very blue home state — the imitation requires little strain: Mr. Grimm, brash and swaggering since his first election to Congress in 2010, has been perfecting the routine for years.
