A slight hike in mortgage rates in August has dampened new home buyer sentiment in the U.K., a monthly poll of British real estate appraisers indicated.

Likewise, a decline in home appraisals—typically undertaken before a house is put up for sale—indicates the market is unlikely to see an uptick in new listings anytime soon. "Our local market place being a seaside resort is usually much quieter over the peak season period, but listings are down further than expected," wrote Peter Mawer, a home valuer from Bridlington in East Yorkshire.
