‘El Maquech’ Review: Big Sounds From a Small Group

In an era when big bands often sound small and nuanced and when smaller ensembles favor intimate and pristine approaches, Stranger Days, the quartet led by 23-year-old trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, offers boisterous, spirited music that frequently sounds like it comes from a much larger group.

On its recently released second album, “El Maquech” (Biophilla), the band presents rambunctious music that is equally rustic and modern.
