Books on the Russia scandal focus on the news. What they need is more history.

17-Jun-2018

“The Russia scandal was far from over — for Mueller, Congress, and the American people,” write Michael Isikoff and David Corn at the close of their best-selling “Russian Roulette,” out in March. And in “Trump/Russia: A Definitive History,” released in May, Seth Hettena riffs on the president’s quest for a border wall to craft this final sentence: “So far, the only wall that is being built is the legal one that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is erecting around the White House, and it increasingly seems too high for America’s forty-fifth president to escape.”

Hurricane Maria would have killed my mother – as it did thousands like her

18-Jun-2018

According to the study, many people, probably thousands, died in the weeks and months after Maria, when the island struggled without electricity and the local government did next to nothing to fight the indifference and negligence of the Trump administration.

My mother would have been one of Maria’s fatalities and as with so many others her death would have blamed on “natural causes”. It pains us both to admit we are grateful she died before Maria devastated Puerto Rico.

Low-income black fathers want to be good dads. The system won't let them

18-Jun-2018

However, our social policies should not treat all low-income black fathers as deadbeat dads, nor suggest this is the norm or adopt this belief as the default position that should be assumed with respect to these fathers.

Despite the pernicious stereotype of the absent black father, black fathers actually spend more time providing care to their children than Latino and white fathers, according to a national study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Jeff Sessions accused of political bias in hiring immigration judges

18-Jun-2018

The Trump administration has been accused of illegally rejecting potential immigration judges for being too liberal, amid outrage over families being forcibly separated at the southern US border and a harsh crackdown on migrants seeking asylum.

Four Democratic members of Congress wrote to Sessions in April expressing concern after whistleblower allegations that the Department of Justice “may be using ideological and political considerations to improperly – and illegally – block the hiring of immigration judges and members of the Board of Immigration Appeals”.

Here’s a Tip: Waiters and Bartenders Like How They’re Paid

18-Jun-2018

While Democrats usually support increasing the minimum wage, these politicians are hearing from Washington’s waiters and bartenders, who’ve said the “raise” offered by Initiative 77 would actually reduce their earnings.

The D.C. Council unanimously supported the increase, but also preserved an hourly “tipped wage” of $5 for servers and bartenders. Forty-three states and the District of Columbia permit restaurants to pay a lower base wage to tipped employees, provided tips bring their incomes up to at least the regular minimum wage.

Doubted at home, bypassed abroad: is Merkel’s reign nearing a frustrated end?

18-Jun-2018

In Merkel’s view, such a bar would be illegal and would wreck her efforts – ongoing since the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis, when Germany accepted 1 million migrants – to create a balanced, EU-wide policy of voluntary migrant quotas.

More seriously, though, Merkel is being challenged from within by her interior minister, Horst Seehofer, former chairman of Bavaria’s rightwing CSU, which is allied to Merkel’s Christian Democrats.

Amazon supplier in China ‘will tackle illegal work practices’

18-Jun-2018

Amazon and its Chinese supplier Foxconn have moved swiftly to tackle illegal working conditions exposed in an investigation by the Observer and rights group China Labor Watch.

Amazon said last week that independent auditors had uncovered issues of concern at the factory in Hengyang, China, making its Kindle tablets and Echo and Echo Dot smart speakers. The investigation and the audit both found that Foxconn had hired too many agency workers – known as dispatch workers – in breach of Chinese labour laws and that payslips showed they had been paid a flat rate for overtime and regular work, instead of the time-and-a-half required by law.

Colombia votes in election that could become fresh poll on Farc deal

18-Jun-2018

Colombia goes to the polls on Sunday to choose the country’s first president since a historic peace deal was signed with leftist Farc rebels.

Polls put Duque as the favourite, though a key decider of the election will be which candidate is able to win the votes that went to defeated centrists in the first round. Duque, though market-friendly, talks tough on drugs and crime, while Petro wants to wean Colombia off its dependence on fossil fuels.

Pittsburgh cartoonist says he was fired after 25 years for making fun of Trump

18-Jun-2018

A cartoonist who lost his job at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes his searing portrayals of Donald Trump were the most likely cause of his firing.

After leaving the Post-Gazette, Rogers wrote an editorial for the New York Times headlined: “I was fired for making fun of Trump.” “When I had lunch with my new boss a few months ago,” he wrote, “he informed me that the paper’s publisher believed the editorial cartoonist was akin to an editorial writer, and that his views should reflect the philosophy of the newspaper.

Next stop, Nina Simone … Paris metro ‘must honour its heroines’

18-Jun-2018

Among the proposed new station names are the French singer-songwriter Barbara – born Monique Andrée Serf – who died in 1997; Lucie Aubrac, a member of the French Resistance who died in 2007; and the American singer Nina Simone, who died in 2003.

Last month, the Europe stop on line 3 was renamed Europe-Simone Veil in honour of the health minister and Auschwitz survivor, who died last year. The three other stations named after women are Barbès-Rochechouart, a tribute to Marguerite de Rochechouart de Montpipeau, who was abbess of Montmartre; Pierre et Marie Curie, after the Nobel prize-winning physicists, and Louise Michel, a Paris Commune militant.
