The plastics recycling industry is facing an investigation into suspected widespread abuse and fraud within the export system amid warnings the world is about to close the door on UK packaging waste, the Guardian has learned.

The ongoing investigation into corruption in the plastics industry comes as the UK seeks new international markets for its plastic waste. In January, China stopped accepting British plastic waste and exports shifted to Malaysia, Vietnam and Poland.

Feds subpoena Pennsylvania dioceses in Catholic clergy sex abuse investigation

 The Justice Department has issued subpoenas to at least five of the eight dioceses in Pennsylvania as part of a federal probe into child sexual abuse inside the Roman Catholic Church.

"It's groundbreaking if we're going to see one of the U.S. attorneys pursuing the Catholic cases," said Marci Hamilton, a University of Pennsylvania professor and chief executive of Child USA, a nonprofit think tank focused on preventing child abuse. "The federal government has so far been utterly silent on the Catholic cases."

The top 10 countries with the highest average life expectancies forecasted for 2040 are:. The study also takes a look at some of the conditions that are shortening people's lives, and projects a significant increase in deaths from non-communicable diseases including diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic kidney disease, and lung cancer.

Malaysia’s Petronas Set to Buy 10% Stake in Giant Oman Gas Field

Malaysia’s state oil company has agreed to acquire about a 10% stake in the giant Khazzan natural gas field in Oman, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Khazzan gas field is currently producing 1 billion cubic feet of gas a day, with work underway to add another 500 million cubic feet a day by 2021. The company is among a consortium planning to develop a giant LNG project in Canada announced earlier in October.

Harvard University's dean of admissions has testified the Ivy League school applies different SAT score standards to prospective students based on factors such as race, but insisted the practice is not discriminatory.

Harvard senior Thang Diep, a refugee from Vietnam, released his marked-up Harvard application to testify in support of the Ivy League school, saying his SAT scores were below Harvard’s average, but the interviewer was impressed by his personality, as well as his essay, which helped him.

A seven-bedroom Georgian mansion in a Scottish village close to Glasgow that has been expanded with the addition of two modern wings, came to the market last week asking for offers over £1.875 million (US$2.44 million).

"It still had the period features, but it wasn't a cozy modern family home," Mr. Stewart-Moore said, adding that the current owners reroofed, rewired, replumbed and redecorated throughout. It was "all about creating a house that was fit for modern-day family living," he said.

Jim Scholefield is leaving as Nike Inc.’s global CIO to join Merck & Co. as chief information and digital officer, effective Oct. 29.

With the hiring of Mr. Scholefield, Merck has expanded the role of its top technology executive to encompass digital business strategy as well as IT operations. That includes building and using emerging technologies “to drive efficiencies, strengthen the security of our infrastructure and support the company’s growth,” a spokeswoman told CIO Journal.
