‘Junk’ Mines the Milken Era for Truths That Resonate Now

Friday 11:47 GMT

“Junk,” the riveting reincarnation of the junk bond era now playing at Lincoln Center, “is a fictionalized account suggested by events in the historical public record,” according to an author’s note in the program. “The characters in this play are dramatic concoctions,” it reads, “stitched together — at times — with details pulled from history, but these characters are never anything other than fictions.”

Friday 11:47 GMT

JAMESTOWN, Australia—Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk may have overpromised on production of the company’s latest electric car, but he is delivering on his audacious Australian battery bet.

Tesla says the system’s 100-megawatt capacity makes it the world’s largest, tripling the previous record array at Mira Loma in Ontario, Calif., also built by Tesla and U.S. power company Edison. “An enormous amount of work has gone into delivering this project in such a short time,” state Premier Jay Weatherill said Thursday, calling the system a clear message that South Australia will be a leader in renewable energy.

Investigation teams from the army and police were dispersed in the area and were “chasing down the perpetrators”, he said.

At least 184 killed in Egypt mosque attack

Today 08:06 GMT

Militants attacked a crowded mosque during Friday prayers in the Sinai Peninsula, settling off explosives, spraying worshippers with gunfire and killing at least 200 people in the deadliest ever attack on Egyptian civilians by Islamic extremists.

The attack targeted a mosque frequented by Sufis, members of Islam's mystical movement, in the north Sinai town of Bir al-Abd. Islamic militants, including the local affiliate of the Islamic State group, consider Sufis heretics because of their less literal interpretations of the faith.

A quick UK-US post-Brexit trade dealLooking at Nafta, that seems unlikely

Today 08:06 GMT

Many, if not most, economists argue that this goal is unachievable through any trade agreement, since the US trade deficit is more closely related to low savings in the country, and its high government deficit, than to trade policy.

Does the recent Canadian experience with the Nafta renegotiations suggest a quick and smooth conclusion of US-UK trade talks? Uncertainty about British access to the EU single market may also complicate talks, since it will affect the value to the US of British market access.
