US Senator Marco Rubio visits Venezuela border, warns Nicolas Maduro

US Senator Marco Rubio on Sunday traveled to the Colombian city of Cucuta, the border city now serving as a distribution point for US aid, part of interim President Juan Guaido's push to bring humanitarian assistance to the economically crippled nation.

During his tour of Cucuta, Senator Rubio visited the actual border point where containers and overturned trucks had allegedly been placed by the Maduro regime, in an effort to block deliveries into Venezuela.

More than 1,500 brave freezing rain to honour Aurora shooting victims

The Rev. Dan Haas told those who gathered near five white crosses erected for the shooting victims outside the Henry Pratt Co. in Aurora that Friday’s “senseless killings” left their families brokenhearted in the city about 40 miles (65 kilometres) west of Chicago.

More than 1,500 people braved snow and freezing drizzle to attend a prayer vigil for five slain co-workers Sunday, two days after they were fatally shot at a suburban Chicago manufacturing plant by a longtime employee who was fired moments earlier.

Canadian missionaries flown out of riot-stricken Haiti

A Canadian couple who had to leave Haiti due to violent street protests say they're happy to be heading home but that their hearts are with the people they left behind.

Wade and Marilyn Fitzpatrick are two of 24 missionaries from Alberta-based Haiti Arise who were flown out of the capital Port-au-Prince late Saturday. In an interview, the Weyburn, Sask.-based couple said the group had to be taken to the airport by helicopter because the roads were blocked by burning tires and protesters armed with rocks and guns.

Calgary neighbourhood rocked by house explosion

(jimbladon/Instagram). There were reports of a house explosion in southeast Calgary with fire crews arriving to find one house completely engulfed in flames early Sunday morning.

Diane Bender, who lives a few doors down, says she and her husband were jolted awake at around 4 a.m. by a loud bang and items falling off their walls. It’s not yet known what caused the fiery blast or whether anyone was inside the home.

How Lidl learnt to be less German in the UK

Lidl, along with its fellow German discounter Aldi, might be growing strongly in the UK right now but it wasn't always that way.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, both Lidl and Aldi have increased their market share steadily over the last couple of years, with Lidl now accounting for 5.3% of the UK grocery market and Aldi 7.5%. Mr Gottschlich thinks they will continue to grow, though not to the extent that they have in their home country.

House explosion reported in Calgary; multiple homes catch fire

There were reports of a house explosion in southeast Calgary with fire crews arriving to find one house engulfed in flames early Sunday morning.

MST, they received approximately 25 calls from Calgary residents in the city’s Douglas Glen Close area who said they were awoken by a loud explosion.

Thousands brave freezing cold in vigil for Illinois shooting victims

“My heart is broken again for the family members of the victims,” said Mary Kay Mace, mother of the late Ryanne Mace, who was killed 11 years ago in a mass shooting at Northern Illinois University.

Saudi Arabia denies crown prince seeks to buy Manchester United

Saudi Arabia on Sunday denied reports that its crown prince was bidding to acquire the famed Manchester United soccer club, suggesting it’s all been a misunderstanding.

In October, the Sun first reported that the crown prince, who’s often referred to by his initials, MBS, was in talks to buy the English Premier League club for more than $3.8 billion, though that was apparently shelved amid backlash to Saudi Arabia following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Ontario father charged with daughter’s murder recovering from self-inflicted gunshot wound

Peel Regional Police say the 41-year-old father arrested in connection with the murder of his 11-year-old daughter, who was the subject of an amber alert Thursday night, is recovering in hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A police media spokesperson told Global News Rajkumar suffered the self-inflicted gunshot wound before OPP arrested him, and the injury was noticed by Peel police once he was taken into their custody.

B.C. couple face long recovery after ‘life-changing’ acid attack in Vietnam

Tammy Nguyen and her boyfriend Nghiêm Võ, who goes by Tom, were visiting Vietnam for the Lunar New Year when the attack happened.

According to Nguyen’s Facebook post, the attack left Võ with burns to 90 per cent of his face and hands, along with burns on his legs and stitches from the knife wounds. In a Facebook direct message, Nguyen said she is by her boyfriend’s side in the ICU.
