Top Wynn Resorts Executive to Leave

Sunday 04:13 GMT

Maurice Wooden, a longtime Wynn executive who is currently president of Wynn Las Vegas, will leave at the end of the year, the company said in a statement Friday.

Mr. Wynn, who stepped down as chairman and chief executive of Wynn Resorts in February and sold his entire 12% stake in the company the following month, has said the idea that he would assault a woman is “preposterous.” In response to subsequent articles, a lawyer for Mr. Wynn sent a statement on his behalf saying he “declined to participate in The Wall Street Journal’s reporting because it is clear that the Journal has no intention of treating him fairly.”

Big Tongues and Extra Vertebrae: The Unintended Consequences of Animal Gene Editing

Sunday 06:04 GMT

When state-sponsored scientists at Nanjing Agricultural University used Crispr to edit MSTN out of rabbits to make them meatier, 14 of the 34 engineered offspring were inexplicably born with enlarged tongues, leading the scientists to warn of abnormalities from gene editing in a 2016 research paper on their project.

“Humans have a very long history of messing around in nature with all kinds of unintended consequences,” said Lisa Moses, an animal bioethicist at Harvard Medical School’s Center for Bioethics. “It’s really hubris of us to assume that we know what we’re doing and that we can predict what kinds of bad things can happen.”

'Beware the affluence of gold': on reading Diderot in the age of Trump

Sunday 06:04 GMT

On a typical day, Denis Diderot might write about ancient Chinese music in the morning, study the mechanics of a cotton mill in the afternoon, then work on a play after dinner.

To round this out, he authored some of the century’s most influential political writing – much of it now eerily prescient in the Trump era. The man was both workhorse and Enlightenment polymath: a genius who wrote 7,000 articles for his celebrated Encyclopédie while producing revolutionary novels, groundbreaking art criticism and proto-Darwinian science fiction.

Despite federal judge’s ruling, Obamacare exchanges are open for business, CMS official says

Sunday 06:04 GMT

A spokesperson from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services told Fox News early Saturday that open enrollment for Affordable Care Act’s health insurance will continue despite the federal judge's ruling that the law is unconstitutional and must be "invalidated in whole.”

U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor, a federal judge in Texas appointed by President George W. Bush, ruled that last year's tax cut bill knocked the constitutional foundation from under Obamacare by eliminating a penalty for not having coverage.

California Dem accused of child cruelty says he spanked daughter, cops say injury not on buttocks: report

Sunday 06:04 GMT

A California lawmaker arrested earlier this week on suspicion of child cruelty said Thursday that the allegation stemmed from spanking his 7-year-old daughter.

The CBS report said that Arambula said he spanked his daughter on the buttocks, but Dyer said the injury “in this case is not on the buttocks.” "It is absolutely permissible for a parent to discipline their child by spanking them on the buttocks, but that is not what we are investigating, and that is not where the injury occurred to the child," said Dyer.

Fox News correspondent Dan Springer said the decision was precipitated after one student, Alex Romero, complained to faculty about the program. Romero also started the petition, the Seattle Times reported. "Every nation enforces its immigration laws, and for those students [that would have participated], they've been cheated," former ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan told Fox News upon hearing about the decision.

The Meaning of ‘Synergy’: Working Together, for Good and Ill

Sunday 03:18 GMT

Long a buzzword in business for the benefits of collaboration, it took on a darker significance in a Robert Mueller memo as a possible synonym for collusion

It was borrowed from the Latin “synergia,” which combined two Greek-derived roots: “syn-” meaning “together,” and “ergon” meaning “work.” When it first showed up in English in the 17th century, “synergy” was used by theologians to refer to cooperation between human will and divine grace.
